How would you manage this as a Manager or Director?

So, a member of your team walks up to you and tells you they feel they have been discriminated against.

Well, the first thing to do is to understand what discrimination actually means, because there are many misunderstandings when you ask this question.

The definition of Discrimination means: β€œAn individual being treated differently to any other individual due to a certain or unique characteristic that they possess"

The Equality Act 2010 serves to protect individuals against discrimination for the following characteristics.

  • Race
  • Gender
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Religious Beliefs
  • Disability
  • Age
  • Gender Reassignment
  • Marriage or Civil Partnerships
  • Pregnancy and Maternity

There are many forms of discrimination, but the basic ones are direct, indirect, harassment, victimisation, discrimination by association and also by perception.

So next time one of your employees claims discrimination in the workplace, would you be able to tell which one your employee is suffering?
